Vioxx May Have Caused 140,000 Serious Heart Attacks
Jan. 25, 2005 - The arthritis drug Vioxx could have
caused an estimated 88,000–140,000 excess cases of serious coronary
heart disease in the USA since its launch in 1999, concludes a study
published online by The Lancet.

Vioxx Withdrawn After Study Suggests It May
Double the Risk of Heart Attack
In a stunning announcement
on Sept. 30, 2004,
drug-maker Merck & Co. announced the withdrawal of the popular
anti-inflammatory drug Vioxx from the market due to a study they were
conducting that shows patients taking the drug face twice the risk of
heart attack compared to those in the test taking a placebo. The FDA,
that approved the drug in 1999, also issued a public health advisory and
news release. It is used by many senior citizens and
others for
arthritis pain relief.

Nov. 1, 2004, (Reuters) - Internal e-mails and other
documents from Merck & Co. show the company fought for years to keep
safety concerns from undermining the drug's commercial prospects, the
Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

FDA Accused of Silencing Vioxx Warnings
Oct. 8,
2004 -The Food and Drug Administration silenced one of its drug experts
who raised safety concerns weeks before Merck & Co. yanked the
blockbuster drug Vioxx due to increased risks for heart attack and
strokes, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee said Thursday.
Researchers Warn of Dangers
of Other Vioxx-Type Drugs
"The senior executives at Merck and the leadership at the FDA share
responsibility..."
Oct. 7, 2004 - The sudden withdrawal of Vioxx from the market may not
have ended the danger of adverse side effects from COX-2 inhibitors.
Researchers writing in the
New England Journal of Medicine say similar popular drugs of
the same class, like Pfizer's Celebrex, may pose similar risks.
